OpenAI launches AI video generator Sora, as previously promised. The tool isn’t available in EU countries just yet.
OpenAI previously announced it would launch Sora before Christmas. The AI specialist is keeping that promise. The AI model for video generation is rolling out on the website sora.com. Only: Europe doesn’t get to enjoy it yet. Sora is not available in European countries. In the rest of the world, users with a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription do get immediate access to it.
With Sora, users can generate videos of up to twenty seconds in up to 1080p resolution. You can also edit existing videos with Sora. The interface works with natural language as well as photos and clips. Users can work with inputs frame by frame using a storyboard.
How many videos you can generate as part of an existing subscription depends. Someone with a Plus account can create up to 50 videos per month at 480p, or fewer at higher resolution.
Restrictions
OpenAI points out that this version of Sora has many limitations. Videos are sometimes unrealistic, especially when it comes to movements subject to the laws of physics. Complex actions over long periods of time also produce strange results. However, the AI specialist considers the tool ripe for sharing with the general public.
To prevent abuse, OpenAI integrates a watermark into the C2PA metadata. That makes it clear that the video was generated with AI. As to be expected, OpenAI integrates guardrails: you cannot abuse Sora for images of (child) abuse, for example.
Access to Sora should be expanded in the coming months, but OpenAI is not giving more details. So it does seem to be the intention to bring Sora to the EU as well, but it is unclear when that will be.
