Last year, researchers at Alphabet made a major breakthrough in the development of quantum computers. Now Alphabet is launching a spin-off company that will deal specifically with quantum.
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is launching Sandbox Technology Inc, a spin-off that will deal with technology for quantum computers. The spin-off follows a major breakthrough in quantum computing research last year. Then Alphabet researchers made great strides in integrating so-called time crystals into quantum systems.
Time crystals
A time crystal is a form of matter that oscillates stably over time. Think of an electron whose spin changes periodically, without requiring external energy and without the electron itself being unstable. The stability of oscillation through time is reminiscent of the stability of classical crystals in space.

Alphabet gets quantum computer spinoff after breakthrough with time crystals
Quantum computers use the spin of electrons to store data. They form the basis of qubits, but are by nature very unstable. External stimuli have a major impact on their status. Time crystals, thanks to their stability, are theoretically a better alternative for building qubits.
New business
Sandbox Technology is now moving into the marketplace armed with that knowledge as its own company. Presumably Alphabet hopes to attract more investment this way. Exactly what the ambition of the spin-off is, we do not yet know. For example, it is unclear whether Sandbox Technology wants to bring technology to the market in the short term or focus on research.
Alphabet will also remain active in the field through Google Quantum. What the relationship between the two entities will be is also not clear at this time.
