Wi-Fi 7 expected in 2023 by MediaTek as first demonstrations already show the new standard

wifi 7

Now that Wi-Fi 6E is finally well embraced as a newcomer among Wi-Fi standards, we can already take a first look at its successor: Wi-Fi 7. Together with the Wi-Fi Alliance, MediaTek is busy developing the new standard and, according to MediaTek, Wi-Fi 7 would be ready for use by 2023.

Wi-Fi standards seem to be following each other at a rapid pace. Indeed, WiFi 7 products will appear on the market as early as next year, according to MediaTek. Knowing that the Wifi 6E standard has only been usable in Belgium since the end of October 2021, things seem to be moving fast.

Wi-Fi 6E had actually made its appearance much earlier. Indeed, the Wi-Fi Alliance introduced the new standard in early 2020. The US, among others, released the required 6 GHz spectrum about a season earlier.

Higher speed needed today

After the release of Wifi 6E, the Wi-Fi Alliance has obviously not rested on its laurels. The new standard Wi-Fi 7, or IEEE 802.11, is currently being tinkered with hard. According to its makers, the new standard would offer a maximum throughput of “at least 30 Gbit per second. A spectacular acceleration of the throughput of Wifi 6, which in theory can handle a maximum of 10 Gbit/s.

The higher speed is meant to address an ever-increasing need. Think, for example, of streaming in 4K and 8K. Another example is virtual and augmented reality, in which manufacturers are investing heavily. Without a fast and stable Internet connection, however, you’re not much with these glasses.

MediaTek

MediaTek may currently be starting the first live demonstrations of the next Wi-Fi standard. The company has the necessary chips on hand for this purpose. In addition to the examples given, MediaTek also sees a future for Wi-Fi 7 in the office and in industrial applications.

Products ready for the new Wi-Fi standard will be released in 2023, according to MediaTek. The Wi-Fi Alliance has yet to officially comment on a date, so for now it remains a bit of a pipe dream.

As with the adoption of Wifi 6E, Europe may not be at the forefront of making the new standard available. In the meantime, we can use Wifi 6E to the fullest, curious about the benefits of this newly introduced standard? Then read all about Wifi 6E and the difference from Wifi 6 here.
