OpenAI brings Codex computer use to Windows 11

OpenAI’s Codex app can now take over and independently use Windows 11 PCs in addition to macOS devices.

OpenAI has expanded the Codex app with computer use on Windows 11. Users can now have the AI agent operate, test, and debug applications on their Windows PC. Additionally, Codex is getting integration with the mobile ChatGPT app.

AI controls Windows apps

After activating the feature in the Codex settings, the AI can independently operate applications. Through commands such as @computer or a specific app mention, for example @Paint, Codex gains access to the desktop environment. The agent can then open applications, test workflows, detect bugs, and verify changes without the user having to intervene manually.

OpenAI is simultaneously adding support for the mobile ChatGPT app on Android and iOS. Users can follow up on ongoing Codex tasks or start new commands from their smartphone, while execution continues on the linked Windows PC.

The integration makes it possible to start a task on desktop and monitor or adjust it on the go via the mobile app. These new capabilities have been available on macOS since April, but are now also being rolled out to Windows users.
