The new model version is focused on coding tasks and following instructions.
OpenAI brings GPT-4.1 to ChatGPT exactly one month after launch. The model is said to be a suitable alternative to o3 and o4-mini for coding, as it “works faster”.
Less chatting, more working
OpenAI launched this version in April and stated that it would be “significantly better” at coding than its predecessor. It would also be better at generating user interfaces and would be less likely to return redundant code. This makes it easier for developers to filter the code. According to early adopters, the model is much less talkative, resulting in more direct answers to most prompts.
In addition to GPT-4.1, two new models were introduced: GPT-4.1 nano and GPT-4.1 mini. GPT-4.1 mini is the replacement for GPT-4o mini. They all support prompts with a limit of one million tokens. This allows them to easily analyze large files. SiliconANGLE writes that overall, the performance is considered only slightly better than that of GPT-4o. So don’t expect noticeably significant improvements; for that, you’d better wait for GPT-5.
The model is now available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users. Enterprise and Edu users will gain access in the coming weeks.
