Google Gemini Can Watch Videos for You (in Drive)

No time to watch a video? Put Gemini to work. The AI assistant can summarize Drive videos for you and extract specific information from them.

Gemini can now watch videos shared with you via Drive. Google announces the new Gemini feature in a blog. The feature is rolling out gradually starting today, but will only be available to all paid Workspace or Google One subscriptions from mid-June.

To use the feature, Gemini first needs access to your Google Drive. The AI assistant will appear when you play a video in Drive’s integrated video player or open the link in a new tab. You can then chat with Gemini about the video file via a chat interface.

Some actions Gemini can perform include creating summaries, highlighting action points, or making an overview of the main highlights. For now, it works exclusively for English-language videos, though Google will likely roll out support for multiple languages soon.

The recent edition of I/O made it clear once again that AI is all the rage at Google. After a difficult start with Bard two years ago, Google has made great strides with Gemini. One of the highlights of the I/O conference was the launch of the new image generator Imagen 4, or the web-surfing AI agent Project Mariner.

Statistics

Want to know if the people you share a video with via Drive have actually watched it? Google Drive now shows you statistics about a video. The details of the video display the number of impressions. That number tells you how often the file has been clicked on, but not whether the video has been watched from start to finish, whether by a human or Gemini.
