Good news for developers: ChatGPT now works with other coding apps on Mac computers.
OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT’s desktop application can now work with coding apps such as VS Code, Xcode, TextEdit, Terminal and iTerm2. That means that as a developer, you no longer have to paste your code into ChatGPT, TechCrunch knows.
Work more efficiently and save more time
Instead of pasting the code itself into ChatGPT, the code you are working on is automatically sent to the chatbot as context to your text prompt. So it is not yet possible to have ChatGPT write code directly into the apps. That is already the case with GitHub Copilot.
The feature is called Work With Apps and is a crucial building block in the development of AI agents, according to OpenAI. The biggest challenge is making sure AI agents understand your system and can work with it effectively. For now, OpenAI focuses only on coding. A prominent use case of LLMs are AI coding assistants, even though they do not always provide increased productivity for workers. In the future, the company wants ChatGPT to work with other types of apps as well.
The feature is now available to Plus and Teams users and will roll out further to Enterprise and Edu in the coming weeks. For now, the feature is only available on macOS; Windows will follow later.
