Logging in to Belgian e-government services with Smart-ID will soon be possible after certification is granted

You will soon be able to log in to government servicesin Belgium with Smart-ID, after the solution has obtained the necessary certification.

The Belgian federal government has awarded Smart-ID the highest trust label for electronic identification. The solution achieved the Level of Assurance (LoA) ‘High’, which means that the system of the Estonian company of the same name meets strict technical and organizational requirements for secure digital authentication.

The verification processes and authentication mechanisms of Smart-ID have been recognized by Federal Public Service Policy and Support (FOD BOSA) as reliable for both public and private applications. Thanks to this label, organizations in regulated sectors such as banks, telecom or insurance companies can rely on Smart-ID for secure and compliant digital access.

Integration in CSAM

With the LoA High label, Smart-ID may now also be used for secure access to Belgian government services. In other words, the solution is certified to act as an Itsme competitor.

However, it is not yet that far: the FOD BOSA must first integrate Smart-ID into CSAM. That portal is the central gateway to the online government services in Belgium. Users can already activate Smart-ID by downloading the app and linking their electronic identity card.

The addition of Smart-ID increases the freedom of choice for citizens and makes the system less dependent on a single authentication method, which benefits the availability of services. At the moment you can log in to the services of the government with Itsme and since the end of 2025 also the MyGov app from the government itself, in addition to the existing authentication methods without an app (SMS, card reader…).

Smart-ID in the EU

With the Belgian accreditation, Smart-ID now has a LoA High recognition in four European countries. This makes it one of a select number of eID solutions that reach this level in multiple EU member states. The Belgian Itsme remains the frontrunner and can be used in twelve EU countries to confirm digital identity.
