Microsoft wants to guide 60,000 employees towards the exit

Microsoft

Microsoft wants to persuade thousands of employees to leave voluntarily, in exchange for favourable terms.

Microsoft is offering around 60,000 employees the option to resign voluntarily. In exchange for their departure, they receive terms that are generally more favourable than what they would get if they were laid off. Microsoft is making the offer to workers in the US, Canada, India and the UK.

Anticipating

This is the second time Microsoft has opted for voluntary departures. The first time, the offer was followed by a round of layoffs. Although Microsoft is not disclosing any details, that is in all likelihood the plan again.

The offer should give individuals as well as teams the chance to anticipate a planned reduction in headcount. Employees have until early December to make a decision. Those who sign up must be gone before the end of the year.

Room for AI

Microsoft has already gone through several rounds of layoffs and has been trying to cut its workforce substantially in recent years. Financial results play no role in this: Microsoft’s employees delivered strong figures last quarter, with revenue up eighteen percent.

Microsoft is in all likelihood trying to cater to the stock market. Investors want technology companies to invest more in AI data centres. Like the other tech giants, Microsoft is investing heavily in expanding its data centres, hoping that demand for AI will justify it.
