Google hit by €2.1 billion lawsuit for unfair European competition

Swedish online price comparator PriceRunner is suing Google for unfair competition in Europe. It is demanding 2.1 billion euros in damages for lost revenue.

Last November, the European court proclaimed that Google was abusing its monopoly position to advance its own online shopping services. The court imposed a monster fine of 2.42 billion euros on the search giant. The initial ruling dates back to 2017 but was finally lost by Google after numerous additional proceedings.

That final decision now forces PriceRunner to file a lawsuit against Google as well. Because of the search giant’s powerful position, PriceRunner has never had a fair chance to compete as an online price comparator.

“We seek compensation for the damage Google has caused us over the many years. In addition, we also see this lawsuit as a fight for consumers who have suffered immensely from Google’s dominant position over the past 14 years and still maintains it today,” said PriceRunner CEO Mikael Lindahl.

Google lost the first appeal after the conviction last year, but the search giant is not giving up. “We feel there are areas that require legal clarification from the European Court of Justice,” it said.
