Despite global shortage, chip sales increased 26% in 2021

Total annual sales accounted for $556 billion in 2021, 26 percent more than in 2020 when sales of $440 billion were recorded.

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), 2021 will be the best year ever for chip manufacturers worldwide. Despite huge sales, factories continue to deliver only sparsely. As a result, numerous industries are running into problems with production lines. A total of 1.15 trillion (1,150,000,000,000) chips rolled off the assembly line in 2021.

Everyone within the chip industry is reaping the benefits of success. Intel reported revenue of $1.2 billion in its last quarter, its best quarter ever. For all of 2021, it also posted its best annual revenue ever.

AMD is also enjoying the good-news show with double-digit growth last quarter. Chip maker TSMC, meanwhile, is pulling out all the stops to cope with higher demand. To do so, it is investing an additional $100 billion over three years.

They also want to house some of the production capacity in Europe. The EU plans to invest a total of 43 billion euros to support the Chips Act until 2030. It is raising that amount through a combination of public and private funding.

The EU spreads that amount over several investments. Among the investment items are investments in modern technologies, skills learning and microchip research.
