Belgian government can save 4 billion euros annually with generative AI, according to Google

According to a study by Google, the government in Belgium can create up to ten percent more value with existing resources through targeted application of AI.

Belgium can save up to 4 billion euros annually by implementing generative AI within government administration, at least according to the study “The AI Opportunity for eGovernment in Belgium”, commissioned by Google. AI can alleviate repetitive tasks and improve the efficiency of about 320,000 civil servants. However, two-thirds of civil servants currently rarely or never use AI, despite its great potential.

AI in government administration

Belgium can free up about four billion euros each year by implementing generative AI within the public sector. This is according to a study by a consultancy firm, conducted on behalf of Google. The technology would be particularly useful for tasks such as case processing, budget management, and regulation. These domains together represent about 75 percent of the economic potential of AI applications in the Belgian government.

The report states that AI can improve the efficiency of about 320,000 positions within the administration. This would reduce repetitive tasks for employees, freeing up time for substantive work and better service delivery. However, the study shows that two out of three civil servants rarely or never use AI, despite its existing potential.

Besides benefits for the government, generative AI can also help businesses. By accelerating administrative processes, the private sector could save up to 1 billion euros per year in costs. However, the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) shows that Belgium ranks sixteenth in Europe. The country also scores lower than France and the Netherlands on the AI Preparedness Index of the International Monetary Fund.
