Is Amazon pulling out the moneybags again for Anthropic?

AWS

Anthropic and Amazon are reportedly in talks again for an investment. Amazon would have an additional condition this time, though.

Anthropic is looking for fresh capital to stay competitive with OpenAI, and according to The Information, old acquaintance Amazon is ready to open its moneybag again. Amazon already invested four billion dollars in Anthropic divided over two tranches. What amount would be involved now is unknown, as Amazon itself is not yet communicating anything.

Investing in Anthropic is also of interest to Amazon. Both companies built a relationship similar to that between OpenAI and Microsoft. In exchange for the capital, AWS is Anthropic’s preferred cloud partner. As such, AWS and its customers are given priority over Anthropic’s technology.

Anthropic is still a young company, but in a short time it cast itself as the great challenger to OpenAI. The company scored high with the third generation of its LLM Claude, which is available in several versions. Anthropic needs capital and data center capacity to keep improving Claude, which it finds at AWS. Google also pulled on Anthropic’s sleeve, but its love with AWS proved to be greater.

Additional condition

AWS would now have an additional clause included in the prenup, according to The Information. Anthropic, like most AI companies, now uses Nvidia GPUs to train its AI models. AWS makes its own chips, Graviton, and would prefer that Anthropic use those from now on.
