From one to Seven: DataCore Wants to Play with the Big Boys

Until 2020, there was only SANsymphony with a focus on block storage. Today, there are seven products in DataCore’s portfolio. After five acquisitions, it can compete across the entire spectrum with the big players in software-defined storage (SDS). Where does DataCore stand in the market today?

At the DataCore Days in the iconic Palais des Papes in Avignon two weeks ago, it became clear that DataCore focuses on providing solutions that not only protect data but also enhance the freedom of businesses. Despite the growth in the portfolio, the focus within SDS remains. Stick to your last.

Abhijit Dey, Chief Product Officer of DataCore, explains that the company’s vision has not changed since its founding: “Protect what is important and preserve it for the future.” This vision is reflected in products aimed at ensuring data security, both in the long term and in daily operations.

Past, Present, and Future

During the presentation, Dey uses the impressive setting of the Palais des Papes as an analogy for how DataCore secures data. The palace walls are three meters thick and protected valuable manuscripts and knowledge for centuries. This protection of information over time is what DataCore aims to achieve for today’s data.

“Today, data is much more volatile,” says Dey, “Our servers can fail, and the information we hold can be lost due to a cyberattack, hardware failure, or human error.”

DataCore wants to ensure that data, like the manuscripts in the Palais des Papes, can be preserved and protected forever. The company offers a solution that provides freedom, protection, and sustainability for data, without being tied to specific hardware, software, or infrastructure. Dey adds: “We ensure that data is always available, secure, and future-proof.”

Freedom from Lock-Ins

According to DataCore, data freedom is essential. “Freedom means no lock-in with hardware, no lock-in with hypervisors, no lock-in with applications, and no lock-in with cloud services.”

This is the foundation of the solutions. Companies want the freedom to choose which infrastructure they use without being tied to one vendor or technology. Therefore, DataCore tries to make its solutions not only flexible but also future-proof.

DataCore emphasizes that this freedom is crucial in today’s technology environment, where companies increasingly prefer open solutions that allow them to switch vendors without compromising their data or systems.

Protection against Cyberattacks

One of the main concerns for companies today is the protection of data against cyberattacks and ransomware. “Our customers don’t want to fear that their data will suddenly be encrypted by a cyberattack,” says Dey. “That’s why protection is essential.”

DataCore offers solutions specifically aimed at protecting data against such threats. With tools like SANsymphony, a block storage solution, and Swarm, an object storage solution, data is not only stored securely but also protected against losses from external attacks.

In addition to protection, DataCore also offers solutions for data preservation. “We want to ensure that the data that is important today remains relevant tomorrow and in the future.” This means that the systems DataCore develops are not only focused on protecting data but also on ensuring access and usability of that data for the long term.

DataCore’s Solutions

DataCore offers a wide range of solutions that help companies manage their data, regardless of the location or technology they use. The various products in the portfolio align with the latest industry trends and help companies handle data efficiently and securely.

DataCore offers a wide array of solutions that a company might need to manage its data, regardless of form or location. The portfolio includes:

  • SANsymphony: Block storage solution for on-premises infrastructure
  • Swarm: Object storage solution for scalable cloud storage
  • StarWind: Edge and ROBO solution for smaller businesses
  • Puls8: Container storage solution for cloud-native applications
  • Nexus: File storage solution for high-performance workloads and AI

StarWind

The latest product in the portfolio is StarWind. This solution offers complete hyper-converged infrastructure solutions (HCI) for SMEs. StarWind is designed to integrate both the storage and compute capabilities of a company without requiring niche equipment from different vendors. It provides customers the freedom to choose the hardware and hypervisor that best suits their needs.

Dey: “StarWind provides freedom at the edge of your network without being tied to a specific vendor or technology. This makes it ideal for companies that want to scale quickly while saving costs.”

ArcaStream

ArcaStream is designed for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI applications. “ArcaStream offers unparalleled throughput and scalability for data-intensive applications like media and research workloads,” says Dey. According to DataCore, this makes it an ideal solution for companies working with heavy data streams that require maximum performance.

Puls8

With the growth of cloud-native applications, Puls8 is an important addition to the DataCore offering. Puls8 provides a container storage solution specifically designed to help companies manage container-based workloads, such as those on Kubernetes.

Dey: “Puls8 enables a company to run cloud-native workloads with zero downtime, which is essential for critical applications.”

Ready for the Future

DataCore offers a future-oriented approach to data management, with freedom, protection, and preservation at its core. With a broad portfolio of solutions, from block and object storage to edge and container storage, it enables companies to manage their data flexibly and securely.

By avoiding vendor lock-ins and ensuring long-term accessibility, DataCore aims to ensure that organizations can not only tackle today’s challenges but also be prepared for tomorrow’s technologies.
