Windows 11 25H2 rolls out: update without big changes

Windows 11 computer

Microsoft has started the phased rollout of the annual feature update: Windows 11 version 25H2.

Microsoft has begun a phased rollout of Windows 11 25H2 for all users. However, most will hardly notice it: 25H2 is delivered as an enablement package (eKB). This means that it is technically a small update that enables the already available functions of 24H2. “Both versions use the same code base, making the update fast and streamlined,” writes John Cable, VP at Microsoft, in a blog post.

Continuous Innovation

The update follows Microsoft’s “continuous innovation” model, where new features are no longer integrated into a single annual release. Users can expect improvements throughout the year via monthly updates. Options such as a redesigned Start menu, more extensive telephone integration and additional productivity options have already been announced.

Although 25H2 looks rather modest in appearance, the underlying improvements are significant. The update introduces AI-supported vulnerability detection and stricter security for admin rights. Obsolete components such as PowerShell 2.0 and WMIC have been removed in this release.

Rollout and Availability

The distribution of 25H2 is phased. Users who do not want to wait can in Settings > Windows Update activate the Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available option. For those already on 24H2, the installation is quick via the enablement package. Users of older versions (22H2 or 23H2) will receive a full upgrade and therefore a slower installation.

With 25H2, Microsoft is mainly focusing on future innovations, while the current focus is on safety, reliability and compatibility.
