Seagate is expanding the family of Rugged drives under the LaCie brand name with the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5. That drive should be rugged, and while supporting high transfer speeds.
The family of LaCie Rugged drives for creative professionals gains another scion: the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5. The drive looks recognizable with its rubber casing, and is available in a variety of colors. The Rugged drive is IP68 certified to withstand water and dust.
Underneath the protection is a capable SSD that supports read and write speeds of 67.00 MB/s and 5,300 MB/s, respectively. Those speeds are due to a 50 GB cache buffer.
If you exceed the capacity of the buffer, the speed goes down sharply. Reading can still be done at 5,000 MB/s, writing is done at a maximum of 1,800 MB/s. You connect the drive to your computer via ThunderBolt 5 or ThunderBolt 4, as these are also more than fast enough by default to handle the transfer speeds of this external hard drive.
Realtime editing
With the Rugged SSD Pro5, Seagate is thinking of creatives who want to edit 6K or 8K videos in real time from the drive. Let LaCie traditionally target a slightly more fashionable niche, so the MacBook Pro or Mac Mini are listed by name as compatible devices. Of course, you can connect the drive to any computer with a suitable port, even if it’s a Windows system.
The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 is available in 2 TB and 4 TB capacities. The devices should still be available this month. We currently only know the suggested retail prices in the U.S.: $400 for the 2 TB model, $600 for the 4 TB drive.
