Qnap introduces with the QDA-UMP4A adapter a solution for those who have a NAS with U.2 slots but still prefer M.2 SSDs.
Qnap is launching the QDA-UMP4A adapter. That’s a niche product that allows you to connect M.2 SSDs in a 2.5-inch U.2 slot of a Qnap NAS. The adapter fits all the way into the U.2 bay and accommodates a PCIe M.2-NVMe SSD. That works without installing any software or drivers, and can take advantage of a heat sink that Qnap implemented to make the most of the free space.
Qnap notes that M.2 2280/2260/2242/2230 NVMe SSDs are more numerous and lower priced than U.2 SSDs. The adapter should allow customers to choose from that wider selection of flash storage.
Small target group
The QDA-UMP4A adapter is an interesting product, as it is aimed at customers who deliberately chose a U.2 SSD solution. That is not the standard option for a NAS, so you would think that most buyers had a good reason for their purchase. Qnap now seems to be finding that U.2 is not always as attractive after all as first hoped.
The adapter works with the Qnap TS-h987XU, TS-h973AX, and TS-h2490FU NAS. Hot-swapping also remains possible with an adapter, provided the NAS model supports it.
