OneDrive now has a native app for Apple M1 Macs

Microsoft OneDrive

Microsoft provides native ARM functionality for the OneDrive sync application on macOS. After nearly a year of testing, the first stable version is available to all.

After Windows on ARM was treated to a native version of OneDrive late last year, it is now the turn of macOS. This means OneDrive can make the most of the performance of Apple’s ARM-based M1 chips.

Software developers who do not optimize their application for Apple’s new M1 chips should turn to the Rosetta 2 emulator. That does a fine job of converting x86 apps to ARM, but emulation is always accompanied by performance degradation. For laptops, that goes hand in hand with reduced battery life.

In addition to the first public stable version of OneDrive for Apple M1 chips, Microsoft is also continuing intensive work on other new features. For example, beta testers can get started with a “Folder Backup” (also known as “Known Folder Move”) on Mac. This allows you to sync the desktop and document folders as if it were a OneDrive folder. This feature is potentially useful for organizations that want to immediately provision new PCs for employees with all the right files.

Those who want to test the latest features in beta need at least macOS Monterey 12.1. Click here for more information on how to enroll and what’s included in the beta test.
