Motorola launches Edge 30 Pro: 144 Hz for enthusiasts

Motorola is introducing its latest flagship phone: the Motorola Edge 30 Pro. The device falls just short of the top specs of other brands, but to compensate, it comes with a sharper price tag.

Those looking to invade democratic neighboring countries or launch premium phones apparently choose to do so Feb. 24. On the heels of Oppo, it is Motorola’s turn to launch the Motorola Edge 30 Pro. Headlines in the general press will not make the phone manufacturers today, but as a specialized medium, we still like to look at what’s new.

Strong chip

The Motorola Edge 30 Pro, like other flagship phones, comes with a Qualcomm 8 Gen 1: the most powerful mobile chip currently on the market. The device is 5G compatible thanks to the chipset. Motorola opts for a 6.7-inch OLED display that supports HDR10+. These are market-standard specifications for a premium device. The Full HD resolution is a bit lower than the QHD resolutions we get from Oppo and Samsung, though.

Motorola aims to compensate for that with a refresh rate of 144 Hz. A high screen refresh rate makes for smooth animations and scroll movements. You notice that, up to a point. To notice the difference between 90 Hz and 120 Hz, you already have to look very intently. In this respect, the step to 144 Hz seems interesting to us mainly to increase the specifications and to drain the battery faster. We cannot imagine a great added value.

The battery will have a capacity of 4,800 mAh. You can charge them with a fast charger at a creditable 68 watts. Wireless charging is also possible, but only at 15 watts.

Cameras

For the cameras, Motorola is following Oppo’s strategy. The Edge 30 Pro gets two main cameras, each with a 50 MP sensor. These sit behind the wide-angle lens and regular lens, respectively. The two cameras get assistance from a 2MP sensor for additional depth information. Taking megapixels as a criterion, the selfie camera is even more important. After all, it gets a 60 MP sensor.

Motorola is launching its device on a pure version of Android 12, without promoting a proprietary shell or adding unnecessary apps. Other manufacturers could learn something from that. The device is available immediately at a suggested retail price of 799.99 euros.
