Microsoft tests Windows 11 desktop watermark on incompatible PCs

windows 11

Microsoft is experimenting with a watermark on the Windows 11 desktop when systems are not compatible with the minimum system requirements.

Anyone running Windows 11 on his or her PC as a Windows Insider (beta tester) will now be clearly shown whether it is compatible with the minimum system requirements. Initially Microsoft worked with a subtle notification in the system overview, but now it is testing more drastic measures. Non-compatible PCs will get a prominent watermark branded on the desktop.

For now, it is not clear what Microsoft wants to accomplish with this watermark, other than to tease users that their devices are officially incompatible. In the past, the software giant has repeatedly let slip that PCs that do not meet system requirements will not receive all updates. In practice, we don’t notice any of that today, but the watermark could potentially trigger that to alert the user.

In the past, the watermark was mainly a punishment for PCs using an un-enabled version of Windows. A watermark to shame is the result. To apply the same tactic to incompatible devices is a bridge too far as far as we are concerned.

Before everyone screams murder and mayhem: this is a test within the Windows Insiders circle. There is a chance that it will one day be rolled out to all users, but there is an equal chance that the feature will be dropped. This kind of testing is useful for Microsoft to find out what the reaction is from users.
