Microsoft unpacks with handsome user numbers. Windows, meanwhile, has 1.4 billion users and Teams climbs to 270 million. The pretty numbers may camouflage some less positive nuances, though.
1.4 billion people use Windows 10 or Windows 11 monthly. In April 2021, before the launch of Windows 11, Microsoft still communicated 1.3 billion monthly Windows 10 users. So the total number of people using a recent version of Windows has increased, although it is not clear how many of them have already embraced Microsoft’s latest operating system.
According to figures from AdDuplex, the figure is about 8.6 percent. That is, just over 120 million people have already made the move from Windows 10 to Windows 11 since launch, either by upgrading or purchasing a new device. The figures are based on a survey of 60,000 PCs. Microsoft unfortunately does not itself communicate how much Windows 11 usage is ticking up.
Teams-users
A similar vagueness is found in Teams usage. Microsoft Teams continues to rank at 270 million monthly active users. As recently as last summer, Microsoft communicated a figure of 250 million monthly active users.
Microsoft has been providing figures on monthly active users since last year, where before it communicated figures for daily activity. By doing so, the company may be camouflaging a waning growth rate. However, it makes sense that the growth in Microsoft Teams users would be slower, since the collaboration tool already appeals to so many users.
Yet Microsoft wants more and more. With Windows 11, for example, Teams is being incorporated into the taskbar. Furthermore, Microsoft is providing the tool with more and more consumer-oriented functionality in hopes of attracting new users.
Revenue increase
Either way, Microsoft is doing well. In the most recent quarter, Windows OEM sales increased 25 percent. Overall, sales totaled $51.7 billion. That was even more than analysts predicted.
