Lenovo Shows AI Screen That Makes Non-AI PC Also AI-Capable

At MWC, Lenovo showcases the AI Display. It’s a concept monitor equipped with an NPU. The screen aims to bring AI capabilities to computers, even those without AI hardware.

Lenovo presents the AI Display at MWC. This screen is a concept, not a finished product that will be on shelves in the near future. The AI Display is equipped with an NPU, optimized for AI workloads.

The NPU supports Lenovo AI Now. AI Now is Lenovo’s local AI companion, which you’ll also find on the manufacturer’s latest PCs with a built-in NPU. These aren’t rare: CPU manufacturers are cramming such small AI accelerators into almost all their new processors in an attempt to sell new computers as ‘AI PCs’. For a computer with a built-in NPU, the added value of the AI Display seems limited.

The screen will perform some smart functions on its own. Lenovo states that the screen can observe and analyze user behavior. The display is on a motorized stand, and the monitor can rotate the screen itself to ensure an optimal viewing angle.

Following Samsung’s Lead

Lenovo isn’t the first to try putting AI into a screen. Samsung earlier made its contribution with an AI screen, though its autonomous AI functionality was rather limited in practice.

Lenovo showcases an interesting concept with the AI Display at MWC, but we’re still searching for real added value. Almost every new laptop today has an NPU on board capable of running AI Now or similar solutions. The screen’s ability to automatically orient itself towards the user seems like a nice show but not so relevant in practice. We’re curious to see if the AI Display will move beyond the concept phase.
