iPhone gets its own 5G modem chip to replace Qualcomm

Apple has proposed a new product, a modem called C1.

The new C1 modem is Apple’s first internal modem and serves as a replacement for Qualcomm modem chips. The first product to use that C1 chip is the newly announced iPhone 16e. That is an entry-level model that replaces the iPhone SE line.

Get rid of Qualcomm

Apple itself gives no reason why it wants to replace Qualcomm, but does say the following: “C1 is the first modem designed by Apple and the most energy-efficient modem ever on an iPhone, delivering fast and reliable 5G connectivity.” So the chip would be a lot more energy efficient than Qualcomm’s.

The reason Apple is testing the CA modem in its latest iPhone, and not in its flagship models, is because the 5G connectivity needs to be tested first and adjusted if necessary. It is unclear for now whether the new generation iPhones, which are usually introduced in September, will also get this model chip.

These are turbulent times for the tech giant. Apple recently bought off a lawsuit surrounding Siri spying practices , and was fined because its App Store policies violate steering rules under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
