Google launched two new Chromebooks today. One of the novelties on the devices is the “Quick Insert” button that gives access to Google’s AI tools.
Pressing the ‘Quick Insert’ button from the keyboard gives you a menu of different options. For example, the generative AI writing assistant “Help Me Write” writes out an email for you. Image generation is not currently available, but that option will be implemented in the future, according to The Verge.
The button also allows you to put today’s date in your document with one click and view recently visited websites. The top row in the menu lets you easily add gifs and emoji. The AI button replaces the earlier Launcher key and thus will be at the level of the Caps Lock key.
New AI tools on the way
Google is betting heavily on AI with the Chromebook Plus series. Numerous AI tools will be added this month, such as “Help me read,” which lets you summarize texts. Live Translate translates text in real time from videos in more than 100 languages. In addition, Recorder lets you transcribe audio clips.
Finally, Recap provides an overview of everything you were working on before you closed the Chromebook. Recap also shows reminders for your next appointment and provides quick access to recently opened files.
Except for Recap, all of these tools are only available on a Chromebook Plus-certified device. For now, the ‘Quick Insert’ button can only be found on the Samsung Galaxy Notebook Plus (starting at $699), which is also being announced today. At the same time, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 (starting at $340) also sees the light of day, without a ‘Quick Insert’ button on the keyboard. It is not yet known if both devices will come to Europe and what the recommended retail price will be.
