Instead of a meeting link, video conversations integrate seamlessly into the chat experience. The new feature is only available within Google Workspace.
Organizations using Google Workspace will soon be able to start a huddle from the chat window. If that sounds familiar to you: Slack has been doing this for some time and even Google used to have it within the now-defunct Google+.
You can start a huddle from the top right of a chat window. With that, you start an audio conversation with the other person. The button is also available within group conversations and “Spaces. If there are multiple users, they will see a chat bubble in the message list to tell them that a user has started a huddle.
In a huddle, you can always enable video or share your screen. Behind the scenes, Google Meet technology pulls all the strings.
So why a huddle instead of a traditional video call like you always do now? Google says at 9to5Google, “Huddles integrate directly and smoothly into the Chat experience. The format supports multitasking while in Chat because you can easily resize your screen or share.”
Huddles will be rolled out within these Google Workspace environments in the coming weeks:
- Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Frontline Starter and Standard
- Essentials, Enterprise Essentials, and Enterprise Essentials Plus
- Nonprofits
