In a GeekBench 5 test, the new Apple M1 Ultra chip with 20 CPU cores scores nearly as many points as the AMD ThreadRipper 3990X with 64 CPU cores
The brand new Apple M1 Ultra chip sticks two fast M1 Max chips into one with a shared interconnect that delivers 2.5 Gbps of bandwidth. Since the latter already delivered fine performance, we are very curious to see how the M1 Ultra performs.
We didn’t have to wait long after the announcement. Via Twitter, the first GeekBench 5 results are shared, and they are downright impressive. We compare scores with competing chips below.
CPU | Single-core | Multi-core |
Apple M1 Ultra | 1793 | 24055 |
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X | 1343 | 25230 |
Intel Core i9-12900K | 2021 | 18424 |
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X | 1724 | 16551 |
Apple M1 Max | 1777 | 12710 |
Across all cores, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X performs narrowly better (4.5% faster), but the latter has 64 CPU cores compared to 20 cores on the Apple M1 Ultra. Also keep in mind that according to Apple, the CPU consumes a maximum of 60 watts while the Threadripper 3990X has a TDP of 280 watts.
The initial numbers are impressive, but this is also just one synthetic benchmark. Therefore, take the above comparison with a big scoop of salt, but as a first impression it can count. We look forward to more analysis and testing when the chip debuts on March 18 in the brand-new Mac Studio.
