The Dutch smartphone brand launches its sixth phone. “The Fairphone” stands out with long-term software support and modular components.

Fairphone gathered the press at its headquarters in Amsterdam this morning to present its latest smartphone. The sixth generation does not follow the logical chronological numbering, but is simply presented as “the Fairphone”. The suffix (Gen 6), brackets included, avoids confusion with the first generation from 2013.

The Dutch smartphone brand aims to be a positive outlier in the smartphone industry. Fairphone does not participate in the race with other manufacturers to bring the newest, shiniest device to market year after year. Fairphone’s mission is to make smartphones more sustainable and extend their lifespan.

Smaller and Lighter

The compact 6.31-inch OLED screen is smaller than the previous generation, and overall the device is also nine percent lighter. Lighter doesn’t mean less sturdy: Gorilla Glass 7i protects the device and “the Fairphone” should also be able to withstand scratches and dents. The IP55 rating makes the new Fairphone less of a water enthusiast.

Further specifications are in line with what you can expect from a phone costing 599 euros including VAT. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor is decent, but it won’t make the Fairphone the strongest in its class. The battery is replaceable.

Focus on Sustainability

Fairphone’s focus is less on computing power and performance, but on sustainability. It boasts an “A-label” according to the new European Union classification for eco-design. Fairphone offers support until 2033 and provides up to five years of warranty.

The Fairphone also focuses on a modular design with easily replaceable components. The back cover can be removed with just two screws (and put back on). Anyone handy with a screwdriver can replace parts or add extra accessories to their heart’s content.

Finally, Fairphone emphasizes that its latest phone has a low CO2 footprint by using recycled and fairly sourced materials. The brand also claims to be 100 percent e-waste neutral. The recommended price of the Fairphone (Gen 6) is 599 euros including VAT, and the device is available in white, black, and green.
