Windows 11 Insiders can now try out Windows Search’s new semantic indexing on Copilo+ PCs.
Microsoft announced via a blog post that Windows 11 Insiders can test out the new Windows Search based on semantic indexing. This AI-powered Windows search allows users to search local files based on informal language. To use this feature, as with all other AI-powered features, you will need a Copilot+ PC.
Improved Windows Search
Microsoft is releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.2992 (KB5050083) to the Dev Channel. With this update, Microsoft provides an inside look at improved Windows Search with Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs.
This new feature allows users to search local files in informal language based on semantic indexing. This feature can be used via Settings, Explorer or the taskbar, and for now is possible with files such as JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT and XLS. Moreover, no Internet connection is required.

The search feature would only work for files in locations users have chosen to index themselves. These locations can be customized through Settings > Privacy and Security > Search in Windows.
This new AI-powered Windows search is being gradually rolled out to Windows Insiders on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Support for Intel or AMD Copilot+ PCs will follow later. Finally, the feature is only available in English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
