Windows Recovery No Longer Works for some Older Versions

A monthly security update has made the recovery functions unavailable for Windows 11 23H2 and Windows 10.

Microsoft has quite a few update issues to resolve this month. Now Microsoft reports that some recovery options are no longer available on older versions. This occurs after installing the most recent security update.

The recovery problems affect older Windows versions, Microsoft notes. These include Windows 11 23H2, 22H2, and various Windows 10 versions, for which Microsoft will end support this fall. Newer Windows 11 versions and Windows Server are not affected.

The bug causes Windows to automatically roll back a pc reset. Nothing is lost, but you cannot reset your PC. Microsoft has since rolled out an out-of-band update KB5066189 and advises installing it. It’s a cumulative update, so you don’t need to install a previous update first.

Windows 11 24H2

While Windows 11 24H2 may not suffer from failing recovery, the newest version has its own problems. Some users are having difficulty installing the update. This is especially common among business users using Windows Server Update Services. Microsoft has already rolled out a hotfix for this.

There are also reports of SSDs and HDDs mysteriously ‘disappearing’ from Windows after installing the August update. However, this problem has not yet been acknowledged by Microsoft. The update adds an important extension to Microsoft Defender, and it is recommended to install it as soon as possible.
