WhatsApp is getting a voice chat feature for groups of all sizes, without calling all participants.
After a testing period for large groups, WhatsApp is now rolling out its voice chat feature to all group chats. This allows users to talk live with each other without leaving the chat or starting a separate call. WhatsApp is also reportedly working on voice calls via the web.
Audio without Calling
Starting a voice chat is simple: swipe up from the bottom in a group chat and hold the screen for a few seconds. Unlike a group call, WhatsApp doesn’t call anyone. Participants can join or leave at any time without causing disruption.
Once a voice chat is active, it appears at the bottom of the screen, with clear options for who is participating and how to listen or mute your microphone. New group members can join at any time.
Privacy Remains Important
Just like personal calls and messages, voice chats are fully end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp gives examples of how this new feature can be used for spontaneous conversations, whether it’s about an exciting football match, big news, or an unexpected chat.
