OpenAI is reportedly working on its own alternative to GitHub following several service interruptions.
OpenAI is building an internal development platform as an alternative to GitHub, according to sources from The Information. The move is reportedly due to various service interruptions at GitHub. The project is currently in its early stages. No further details are available yet.
GitHub alternative
OpenAI wants to develop its own GitHub alternative. This decision was made after several GitHub outages left the platform temporarily unavailable to OpenAI engineers. According to the monthly GitHub Availability Reports, the company reported five outages in December last year, and two in January 2026. The outages lasted an average of one hour. OpenAI now wants to avoid such interruptions with its own development platform.
“The project is still in an early stage and would likely not be completed for months,” according to someone with knowledge of the matter speaking to The Information. Furthermore, the company reportedly intends to make its GitHub competitor available to customers.
The project represents a direct challenge to GitHub, which is owned by Microsoft. Microsoft has already invested billions in OpenAI. Late last year, the AI company made its AI coding assistant Codex available on GitHub.
