If you use the clock in the Windows taskbar to read the time down to the second, you’ll soon be in for a surprise.
The KB5053643 update for Windows 10 will soon be automatically implemented for all users. This update removes the clock display in the drop-down menu that appears when you click on the clock in the taskbar.
Too Taxing for the CPU
Previously, the drop-down menu showed the date, day of the week, and the time down to the second. Now, only the calendar and weekday remain. The digital clock in the taskbar itself still displays the time, but without seconds.
According to Microsoft, this adjustment is necessary because displaying seconds is taxing on the Windows 10 UI. Extra resources need to be accessed to update the time every second, which leads to performance reduction. It even causes the CPU to enter sleep mode, writes PCWorld. This was already the case in Windows 11, but Microsoft has re-added the function as an option there.
Microsoft seems unsure about what to do with the nearly retired operating system. Recently, the tech giant brought new features to Windows 10, along with advertisements for new laptops. The transition doesn’t seem very popular worldwide yet, but in Belgium, 42 percent have already switched to Windows 11.
