Microsoft is reportedly testing a feature that reduces energy consumption based on user interaction.

Microsoft is testing a new feature in Windows 11 that can extend the battery life of your laptop or 2-in-1, according to Windows Latest. The new “User Interaction-Aware CPU Power Management” feature reduces energy consumption when you’re not actively using your device.

Smart Energy Management

The system detects if your mouse, keyboard, or screen haven’t been used for a while. In that case, Windows switches the device into an inactivity mode. The CPU is then throttled to lower clock speeds or enters a more sleep-like state.

As soon as you use your mouse or keyboard, Windows switches back to a normal or high-performance mode. According to Microsoft, this will happen without noticeable delay. When viewing content, the system remains in normal mode.

Potential Impact on Performance

Although the feature is aimed at battery saving, Microsoft warns in its blog that the feature may also impact performance. Users can disable the option if they wish.

Additionally, Microsoft is working on a Copilot feature that monitors battery status in real-time and proactively suggests settings such as brightness. This happens locally via a script, without sending your data to the cloud or AI models.

The feature is currently being tested in Windows 11 build 26200.5603 and will officially be part of version 25H2. It will also be rolled out to 24H2 later.
