Microsoft removes the option to open files in classic Teams. The company does this a few months before the end of the classic version on July 1, 2025.

Microsoft has recently removed an important feature, namely the option to open a file in the classic version of Microsoft Teams. The company started withdrawing this feature on April 15, which will continue until April 30. This feature will disappear from the classic version of Teams for Windows desktop, Mac desktop, and the web. This change is notable since support for classic Teams will expire on July 1, 2025 anyway.

“Major change”

Microsoft announced that it is removing the option to open a file in classic Teams via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portal, as reported by Neowin. The company labels this feature as a “major change”. The announcement reads as follows:

“The option to open a file in the classic version of Microsoft Teams will be withdrawn from April 15, 2025, through April 30, 2025. Instead, we recommend opening the file in the appropriate app (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Microsoft PowerPoint) on desktop or web, where we will continue to invest our development resources. This deprecation is intended to address certain security vulnerabilities that have recently emerged with classic Teams. Note: This deprecation does not affect the file opening options for the new version of Microsoft Teams.”

This feature will disappear from the classic version of Teams for Windows desktop, Mac desktop, and the web. The change is implemented automatically and requires no action from administrators. Support for Classic Teams ended in October 2024, but the app is still available until July 1, 2025.
