Microsoft announces the end of its Remote Desktop app. The app will be replaced by the Microsoft App from May 27.
From May 27, 2025, Microsoft will no longer support the Remote Desktop app for Windows. The app will be removed from the Microsoft Store and will no longer be available for installation. Users will need to switch to the Windows App to maintain access to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box. The Windows App can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.
Transition to Windows App
“Users must switch to the Windows App to ensure they maintain access to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box,” according to Hillary Braun in a blog post. Microsoft states that the Windows app offers several improvements over the Remote Desktop app for Windows.
Unlike the Remote Desktop app, the Windows app provides unified access to multiple Windows services, including cloud PCs and virtual desktops from a single streamlined interface. Additionally, it offers customizable start screens, support for multiple monitors, and dynamic screen resolutions. Furthermore, the Windows app enhances the remote work experience through Microsoft Teams optimization and easy switching between accounts.
