Microsoft tests export function in Recall

Windows 11 is testing a new export function for Recall screenshots on Copilot+ PCs, allowing users to share their screen captures with external apps via a unique, encrypted export code.

Windows Insiders in the European Economic Area (EEA) are receiving the option to export Recall snapshots in the latest test version of Windows 11. This function allows sharing captured screen moments with trusted third-party apps or websites, using a unique export code. The new feature is available in the beta channel 26120.4441.

Unique export code

Recall is a feature on Copilot+ PCs that automatically captures screenshots of the screen. With the new export option, users can now use this data outside the operating system. Upon first use of Recall, users receive a unique export code. This is required to decrypt screenshots. The code is shown only once. If lost, the user must reset Recall, which will delete all existing data.

To initiate an export, users must authenticate via Windows Hello. This can be done through the settings page under Privacy and security > Recall and snapshots > Advanced settings. Users can choose to export previous screenshots, for example from the past seven or 30 days, or enable continuous export for future snapshots.

The exported files are encrypted. Third parties wanting access to the snapshots need both the export code and the correct folder path. Microsoft itself does not have access to the code and cannot recover it.

Manual start

Organizations can use group policy to determine whether users are allowed to perform exports or not. The default setting on managed devices disables exporting. Each export must be manually initiated by the end user.

After installing the build, existing Recall settings are automatically cleared. Users with a Copilot+ PC must reconfigure their preferences. Microsoft states that this is necessary to correctly activate the export function. The export function is currently only available to Insiders in the EEA.
