Uploading apps to the Microsoft Store is now free for independent developers.
Microsoft has announced that individual developers can now upload apps and games to the Microsoft Store for free. Until now, they had to pay a one-time fee of 19 dollars to publish apps in the online store.
Lower Threshold for Developers
With this change, Microsoft hopes to attract more independent developers. “Developers no longer need a credit card to get started, removing a significant barrier that has held back many creators worldwide,” the company stated in a blog post.
According to Microsoft, eliminating this entry fee creates a more inclusive and accessible environment, giving more creativity and innovation a chance. Developers now only need to use a personal Microsoft account and verify themselves with an ID and a selfie.
More Apps for the Store
Free uploading is a welcome change, as the Microsoft Store currently has over 250 million monthly active users. By removing the barrier, the company aims for a larger influx of small apps and tools that can further enrich the offerings. All app types are welcome, from Win32 and UWP to PWA, .NET MAUI, and Electron. Microsoft is now making free uploading available globally in nearly 200 countries.
