The unclear privacy settings in the Meta AI app are causing problems.
Users of Meta’s new AI app have unintentionally shared private conversations with the chatbot publicly. Among other things, addresses, lawsuits, and other sensitive information ended up in a public feed, reports TechCrunch.
Confusing Interface
The messages originate from the Meta AI app, which has been available since late April. This app allows users to generate AI responses and create images, but also contains a “Share” button that can post chats to a public feed.
The problem is that many users don’t realize this button makes their conversation public. According to PCMag, it’s not clearly visible where exactly the message ends up; you only notice afterwards. Meta does allow users to delete shared conversations, but by then it’s often too late.
Small Scale, Big Consequences
The damage seems limited for now: the app has been downloaded “only” 6.5 million times. However, with over a billion monthly users of Meta AI in Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook, the risk of more problems is real.
Meta has already come under fire in Europe several times before. Whether these new leaks will lead to additional investigations is still unclear. The interface of AI tools remains too often unclear about what happens to that personal data for now.
