Copilot Listens to ‘Hey, Copilot’ in Windows

microsoft copilot

Microsoft brings the voice mode back to Copilot. You will soon be able to start a conversation with Copilot by saying “Hey, Copilot.”

No one is surprised anymore when you say “Hey, Google” or “Hey, Siri” to your smartphone. Microsoft now wants people to say “Hey, Copilot” to their PC. Through Windows Insiders, Microsoft is testing voice control for Copilot in Windows, notes PCWorld.

Talking to your PC isn’t new. Up to Windows 10, you could wake up Cortana with a simple voice command. However, in the summer of 2023, Microsoft finally did away with Cortana as the AI assistant was hardly used.

Hey, Copilot

In the latest Windows 11 test build, Microsoft brings back voice control for Copilot, allowing you to start a conversation with “Hey, Copilot.” You will first need to manually enable the feature if you want Copilot to actually respond. You do this through Copilot’s settings.

Search in the settings for a Voice Mode and turn it on. Copilot will now listen for the voice command “Hey, Copilot.” The Copilot interface will have a microphone icon to listen to your voice. You will now need to be careful with what you say, so Copilot doesn’t secretly listen in, as our mobile AI assistants sometimes tend to do.

Hear, See, and Speak

Copilot now has multiple senses. With Copilot Vision, available in the Windows app for just over a month, the AI assistant can look at your screen. And yes, Copilot can also talk back with Copilot Voice, although it currently only speaks a select number of languages.
