OpenAI introduces a new test feature that allows users to have conversations with multiple people and ChatGPT. The feature is currently not available in Belgium.
OpenAI is rolling out the new ‘group chats’ feature in ChatGPT, following a successful test period earlier this month. With this new feature, users can collaborate in a shared chat window and have conversations with each other and ChatGPT. Users can add up to twenty participants to the conversation. OpenAI is currently rolling out the feature to all logged-in users worldwide.
Collaborating in one Chat
In a shared chat, users can make plans together, make decisions or gather information, with support from ChatGPT. This can range from organizing a dinner to working out a school assignment or work project.
The chatbot can help in a group conversation with tasks such as comparing options, summarizing shared documents or suggesting ideas. Everyone in the group can actively participate in the conversation, while ChatGPT responds when relevant. Users can also explicitly address the chatbot to involve it.

OpenAI makes clear that group chats are completely separate from private conversations. The chatbot does not use memory from previous conversations and no new memory information is stored based on the group chat. ChatGPT uses the GPT-4.5 model in these conversations (internally referred to as GPT-5.1 Auto).
Available after Test Period
The new group chats are available for users with a Free, Go, Plus, or Pro subscription. After an initial pilot test in several countries, OpenAI reports that the test has been successfully completed. “Group chats are now being rolled out globally,” the message on X states.
