Google Search gets new AI injection with AI Mode

AI Mode in Google Search

Google is bringing a new AI search tool to Google Search. It offers a chatbot experience within the search engine and is currently only available to try in Labs.

Google’s new AI search tool, AI Mode, ensures that the chatbot experience is even more deeply embedded in the search engine. “It combines advanced model capabilities with Google’s best information systems, and it’s built into Google Search”, as stated in a blog post. Currently, AI Mode is still in the testing phase and is only accessible to users with a Google One Premium subscription, via the Labs section of Google Search.

Users can enable AI Mode via the tab located under the search bar, next to Images or News. When you enter a search query here, you receive an AI-generated answer based on everything in Google’s search index. This makes the user experience similar to communicating with a chatbot like Gemini. The difference is that this search model communicates directly with the internet and can therefore gather real-time information.

AI Mode uses a customized version of Gemini 2.0. This allows the model to answer questions that require further investigation or reasoning. “You can ask nuanced questions that may have previously required multiple searches, such as exploring a new concept or comparing detailed options, and receive a helpful AI response with links for more information”, according to Robby Stein, VP Product, Google Search, in a blog post.

Google is making this new AI search tool available in Labs. Only users with a Google One Premium subscription can try out the tool.
