GitHub Adds APIs to Measure Copilot Usage Within Organizations

Github copilot

GitHub is making Copilot usage APIs available, allowing organizations to retrieve usage statistics.

GitHub has announced new Copilot usage APIs that provide insight into Copilot usage within an organization. These APIs allow IT and security teams to request reports with figures and user-specific statistics, including feature usage, engagement, and adoption of Copilot functionalities.

The reports include usage statistics for various Copilot features and data on how users interact with the functionality. With this API, users gain insight into the rollout and use of Copilot, for example, for internal reporting, license management, or monitoring adoption within teams. Administrators must first enable the policy for Copilot usage metrics.

Access to statistics

To view the data via the API, the “Copilot usage metrics” policy must be enabled. For enterprise accounts, this is done via the Enterprise settings: administrators go to the Enterprises page, select the correct enterprise, and open the AI Controls tab. In the left sidebar, they select Copilot and under Metrics, they set the setting to Enabled everywhere.

For standalone organization accounts, it goes through the organization settings: administrators open the Organization page, go to the Settings tab, and choose Copilot > Policies in the left sidebar. Under Features is the option Copilot usage metrics, which must be set to Enabled.
