The hackers were able to capture personal data including name, address, e-mail address and phone number. Passwords and payment information were not compromised.

Game Mania informs its customers via e-mail that it fell victim to a ransomware attack at 3 a.m. on Jan. 10. The hackers accessed a server containing “company information,” including personal data. Passwords and payment information were not captured.

Following the discovery of the data breach, Game Mania immediately took the affected systems offline. An investigation into the situation is currently underway to restore everything as quickly as possible. Along with the investigation, an outside security expert is also going to analyze the current infrastructure and tighten existing security procedures.

Because the store operates in Belgium and the Netherlands, it has notified privacy authorities in both countries. There is no disruption to Game Mania’s physical stores. The company is communicating clearly through a dedicated status page on which it will post updates with more information as soon as it is available.

Game Mania also made it clear in the email to customers that they should be wary of phishing emails and other malpractices. The personal data collected is believed to be sold by hackers on the dark web.
