Microsoft Authenticator discontinues password manager this summer

Microsoft will discontinue the password manager in Authenticator from August 2025. The function will be moved to Microsoft Edge.

From June 2025, users will no longer be able to save new passwords in Authenticator, Microsoft’s two-factor authentication app. The company is shifting its password manager from Authenticator to Edge. The reason for this is to create a “more unified user experience,” according to the company in a blog post. Microsoft will phase out the function, with a final end from August 2025.

Password function Authenticator

Microsoft writes that from July 2025, it will no longer offer the password function within Authenticator. With this function, users can save passwords in Microsoft’s 2FA app, and autofill ensures that you can use the passwords on different devices. This function will be removed from Authenticator from July 2025.

The removal of this function will be gradual. From June 2025, you will no longer be able to save new passwords in Authenticator. A month later, in July, you will no longer be able to use autofill. Finally, from August 2025, your saved passwords will no longer be accessible in Authenticator.

To Edge

The function will not disappear completely, but will be incorporated into Edge. To ensure that your saved passwords in Authenticator are still available, you need to be logged into Edge with the same Microsoft account as the Authenticator app. Microsoft will then provide automatic synchronization.

Moreover, there is the option to export your saved login credentials, to use them later in another password manager. To do this, go to Settings and click on Export passwords > Export. This will produce a CSV file that you can then upload to another password manager.
