Customer Data from KLM and Air France Take Free Flight

klm data breach

The European airlines KLM and Air France report on “”unauthorized access”” to an external customer service. No personal passenger data is believed to have been leaked.

The Dutch airline KLM and the French Air France have experienced a data breach. Since both companies have formed a group since 2004, they are issuing a joint statement. The incident occurred at an external service used by customer service. The internal systems remained unaffected.

KLM states however that the intruders gained “”unauthorized access”” to customer data. Knowing that both airlines together transport nearly one hundred million passengers annually, that’s quite a lot of customers. The airline emphasizes that no sensitive data such as passwords, travel details, Flying Blue miles, passport or credit card information has been stolen.

The internal IT security teams, together with the involved external party, took immediate action to stop unauthorized access and prevent recurrence. KLM and Air France subsequently informed the Dutch and French authorities, respectively. Those who have recently flown with either airline are advised to be vigilant for suspicious messages and emails.

The identity of the “”external party”” is wisely kept secret. Recently, many organizations, including Google, have been affected by data breaches in their Salesforce databases. Whether there is a link to this incident is unclear.
