Hackers captured medical information on 53,900 Belgians at Medicheck. The data now appears open and exposed on the dark web.

In late September, hackers from the Killsec group broke into Medicheck, a firm where employers can book a checkup doctor for sick employees. The attack captured more than 50,000 documents containing reports from 750 control doctors.

Earlier a “teaser” appeared, now all the data have appeared on the dark web, HLN writes. There they can simply be viewed for free. Medicheck wants to contact all the people involved as soon as possible, but the company is seriously disrupted by the attack.

Medical data leaked

It involves medical records of a total of 53,900 Belgians, both patients and doctors. In addition to names, the records include information about symptoms of illness, prescribed medications and even whether or not the patient was “justifiably” absent in the doctor’s opinion.

Medicheck CEO Dina De Hack confirms to HLN that these are patient-centered reports. The company further promises to work more closely with the CCB in the future and will be audited quarterly.

The hackers of Killsec are not their test case in our country. The group already made its presence felt in early September when it made off with data from Belfius and insurers DVV and CDA. The attack was actually aimed at an external software supplier. That turned out to be Penbox, a Brussels-based company. According to sources, Penbox would have paid a ransom to prevent the data from being leaked.
