Things are slowly becoming known about the cyber attack on several port terminals. The Dutch National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) focused on the case in recent days and think it is not a coordinated attack.

Cyber criminals launched a cyber attack Jan. 28 against IT systems of petrochemical companies. Companies from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany fell prey to the attack.

Last week, the NCSC looked into the matter to find out who was behind the attack. According to the Dutch center, the attack was not coordinated.

Germany is also investigating the matter, as companies there were also victims of the attack. German newspaper Handelsblatt reported that cybercriminals deployed Blackcat ransomware.

Belgium remains silent

Investigations are also ongoing in Belgium, but nothing is being shared with the outside world about them yet. Victims in our country were Oiltanking and Sea-Invest, the latter operating in the Belgian ports of Antwerp, Ghent and Zeebrugge. Last weekend’s problems seem to be getting resolved at Sea-Invest. The company is working hard to get the last things operational again.

Sea-Invest was hit during the night of Jan. 30. As a result, administrative systems were infected. The company announces that it immediately enlisted the help of Secutec. Backups remained secure from the attackers and measures were taken to protect suppliers and customers.
