The European Commission is introducing an application that allows EU users to prove whether they are old enough for certain websites. This application serves as an interim solution for the future digital identity card.

The European Commission is working on a “uniform solution for age verification” of certain websites. This verification is done through an application that allows EU users to prove whether they are old enough for certain age-restricted websites related to gambling, alcohol, or pornography, among others. The application will be launched in July 2025 and serves as an interim solution for the digital identity card, which should be operational in November 2026.

Age-restricted websites

The new white-label app for age verification is being developed by T-Systems and Scytáles. Additionally, each member state can customize the application to their own house style, such as translating it into the national language.

After installing the app, users need to verify their age using, for example, a passport scan or by linking it to their banking app. Subsequently, age-restricted websites will be shown whether the user in question is old enough to gain access, without sharing any personal data.

Temporary solution

This app will appear in July 2025 and is intended to function as a temporary interim solution until the digital identity card is introduced in November 2025. Currently, a source code of the Android version is available on GitHub.
