City of Antwerp sends phishing emails with own email address

City of Antwerp is believed to have been hit by a hack. The city’s support email address allegedly sent out fake phishing emails about blocked MetaMask wallets.

The support e-mail address of the city of Antwerp is allegedly sending out phishing e-mails. This was noticed Tuesday by Frank Louwers and shared on X. The e-mail stated that a MetaMask wallet would be blocked. According to a City of Antwerp spokesperson to Data News, the hacking problem would lie with an external partner. That is a possible slant, but the e-mail address is indeed the domain of the City of Antwerp.

Own address

One or more official e-mail addresses of city of Antwerp were allegedly hacked and misused for phishing. Frank Louwers shared on X a fake e-mail he received from the city. A city spokesman told Data News that this was not an official e-mail address, but it appears to be. In fact, Louwers’ example reads “support@antwerpen.be.

Phishing emails from the government are a common way to trap users. Usually, minor changes are made to the sender’s email address, so the recipient does not immediately see if it is an official address.
