Telenet launches business mobile subscription that adapts to your usage

Telenet is introducing Business Mobile Dynamic, a new type of mobile subscription that automatically grows with employees’ data usage. The operator wants to address the lack of insight into data bundles at Belgian companies.

How much does your organisation pay for mobile subscriptions, and how much data do employees actually use? Many organisations find that question hard to answer, according to recent research by Telenet. The telecom provider from Mechelen is launching a new mobile subscription that adapts to your usage.

With the launch of Business Mobile Dynamic, Telenet takes a different approach from its classic subscriptions. Instead of a predefined amount of data, the subscription now adapts to the actual usage of the individual user. This process runs without an administrator having to intervene manually.

Lack of insight into data usage

A survey by Profacts, carried out for Telenet among 300 Belgian SMEs and large enterprises, shows that control over mobile usage is often lacking. Although 70 percent of companies offer mobile subscriptions to their staff, 45 percent do not know exactly how much data their most commonly used subscription includes. For organisations with more than 50 employees, that figure is as high as 96 percent.

The cause of this lack of overview lies in the large differences between user profiles. A field employee who makes many video calls uses 30 to 40 GB per month on average. An administrative employee who mainly works in the office over wifi often needs only 3 GB. Yet in many companies, these two completely different usage profiles are given the same subscription.

Karl Joosten, Product Manager Mobile Connectivity at Telenet, notes that remote working and cloud applications have made data usage less predictable. “A fixed data volume simply no longer matches the reality of daily usage on the work floor,” Joosten says. According to him, the new system reverses the logic, because the subscription now adapts to the employee rather than the other way around.

Adapting to actual usage

The new system starts each month with a basic bundle of 15 GB. Depending on actual usage, the user automatically moves up to a higher bundle of 50 GB or 300 GB. The corresponding prices apply immediately, so companies pay less for unused data. Telenet does not state exact prices.

The new offer is available to companies with six or more employees. Through the Business Mobile Portal, organisations can manage their entire mobile fleet and monitor usage closely. They hope this will limit operational disruption and unexpected costs when limits are exceeded.

Telenet also shows flexibility with its bundles. Since April, it has let customers put together their own bundle instead of imposing pre-made combo packages. According to the telecom provider, this should lead to more transparent prices, although transparent does not necessarily mean cheaper.
